Abstract

The development of theories in the domain of cognitive psychology is crucially influenced by research and findings in the field of expertise. A great number of recent studies und models emphasize that an expert is not a general genius, but a person with extensive knowledge and skills in his specific domain. Beyond this contextualization of expertise we argue that two other kinds of context have to be taken into account when trying to explain cognitive processes of expert problem solving: situation and culture. Empirical evidence is discussed with regard to such a threefold contextualization of expertise.
