Abstract

To visualize the contours of the pelvic limb joints, contrast radiography was performed in 47 joints of cadaver limbs of cattle. Among other features, especially the spherical shape of the hip joint and the cranioproximal pouch of the femoropatellar joint extending under the quadriceps femoris muscle could clearly be demonstrated. The results of recent studies regarding the communication of the compartments of the stifle joint were confirmed. At the tarsus, the division between the tarsocrural and the proximal intertarsal joint, located dorsally, and the shape of the distal joint cavities were visualized. The results of the contrast studies were used to determine alternative sites for arthrocentesis, which were subsequently used in 97 clinical cases of hind limb septic arthritis. The hip joint was found to be most easily accessed from a dorsolateral approach. From this access, a jointlavage was possible, even in the standing animal. The proximal recess of the femoropatellar joint was easily accessed from laterally, also in the standing animal, for arthrocentesis. The lateral femorotibial joint could be reached from a lateral or caudolateral approach, which seemed to be easier than from the craniolateral pouch. In case of septic arthritis of the tarsocrural joint, the proximal intertarsal jointshould be entered separately from dorsomedially, to ensure its inclusion in a joint lavage or arthrotomy.
