Abstract

Der Beitrag untersucht erstmals das für die Kartographie des frühen 16. Jahrhunderts aufgrund seiner umfangreichen Koordinatenlisten bedeutsame geographische Werk „Repertorivm in Formam Alphabeticam“ des Memminger Stadtarztes Dr. JAKOB STOPEL († 1535), das 1519 in der Offizin des Gutenberg-Nachfolgers ALBERT KUNNE gedruckt wurde. Mit der Betrachtung von STOPEL s wissenstheoretischem Umfeld – Freundschaft mit dem Benediktinerpater NIKOLAUS ELLENBOG (1481-1543) – werden gänzlich neue Einblicke in den schwäbischen Klosterhumanismus ermöglicht. Zudem werden Vorschläge gegeben, welche kartographischen Quellen STOPEL für sein geographisches Lexikon verwendet haben könnte.

Abstract

The article deals for the first time with the “Repertorivm in Formam Alphabeticam”, a geographical dictionary compiled by Dr. JAKOB STOPEL (†1535), which contains more than 8600 geographical coordinates of regions, towns, waters and mountains. STOPEL was a general practitioner in the imperial city of Mem-mingen, Swabia. His opus was printed in 1519 by ALBERT KUNNE, who had a printing press in Memmingen since 1509. The detailed analysis of the scientific environment in which STOPEL worked and offers new insights into the Humanism in Swabian monasteries of this time – for example, his friendship with the Benedictine monk NIKOLAUS ELLENBOG (1481-1543). In addition, the article discusses the cartographic sources of STOPEL’s table of coordinate, which includes the location of places in the New World, remarkable information for this time period.
