Abstract

This article analyses three travelogues of the Soviet Union/Russia by Ryszard Kapuściński, Mariusz Wilk, and Yoko Tawada. As these authors position themselves differently towards the State in question, their views on how to write a travelogue and how to describe another culture are revealed. This contrast brings to the fore the particular communicative situation that shapes at once the speakers’ and their audiences’ identities, as well as the pictures of the country depicted in the travelogues.
