Abstract

The project titled “Ottoman/Turkish Image in the Current History Textbooks of the Balkan and Black Sea Countries,” funded by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Hacısalihoğlu, investigates the representation of the Ottoman Empire and Turks in primary and secondary school history textbooks used in the 2010–2011 academic year. Covering Bulgaria, Greece, South Cyprus, North Macedonia, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Albania, Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, the study adopts an interdisciplinary approach grounded in imagology. This theoretical framework enables a comparative analysis of self/auto and other/hetero images constructed in national historiographies. Recognizing history textbooks as key instruments through which states transmit political narratives and shape collective memory, the project analyzes textual and visual content using text and discourse analysis methods, supplemented by student surveys to assess the internalization of stereotypes. The findings reveal that representations of Ottomans/Turks are predominantly negative and closely shaped by contemporary political contexts rather than shared historical experiences. The study argues for the revision of history textbooks to promote a more balanced interpretation of the Ottoman period as a common past, thereby contributing to mutual understanding and the peaceful resolution of ongoing regional conflicts.
