Abstract

This article introduces the concept of “Socialist Ottomnism” to explain the Armenian Revolutionary Federation’s (Tashaktsutyun) transition from radical to reformist socialism. Through an analysis of the post-1908 newspaper Azamard, it demonstrates that the structural inequalities, dispossesion, and security crises rooted in the Tanzimat era persisted into the Second Constitutional Period. Centered on the defense of peasant rights, Azadamard articulated a class-based discourse of solidarity among Armenian, Kurdish, and Turkish peasants who shared the same exploitative conditions. Thus, the paper argues that Azadamard not only exposed the unrealized promises of Tanzimat reforms but also embodied the practical manifestation of Socialist Ottomanism in the Ottoman public sphere.
