Abstract

This chapter focuses on international comparative content analyses and critically reflects on the pervasive Western influence in published research. Based on a secondary data analysis of 186 comparative content analysis studies, it uncovers a geographic and linguistic dominance of Western countries and languages in international comparative research. As one strategy to counter these biases, the chapter offers an overview of rapidly evolving and cost-efficient computational methods for multilingual text analyses, including state-of-the-art models like GPT. The chapter first explores the opportunities for international comparative research in employing computational text analysis to enhance large-scale text analysis in multiple languages. Then it critically discusses the challenges and possible risks of computational methods in perpetuating Western dominance. Finally, the chapter provides a curated list of open-source, accessible and free to use tools for multilingual resources that can serve as an orientation for practical implementation.
