Abstract

During the implantation of Deep Brain Stimulation Electrodes for the treatment of Parkinson's disease the operating team of neurosurgeons and neurologists evaluates the symptom improvement at multiple electrode positions in order to decide where a permanent electrode can achieve the best benefits. This evaluation is done and documented manually. In this project a mechatronic device has been developed that measures the main symptoms rigidity, tremor and bradykinesia. The acquired data support the neurologist to decide on the implantation site. This paper describes the software architecture of the device, since the software on the mechatronic device as well as the user-software presenting the data to the neurologist are essential for the benefit of the decision were to place the electrode.
