Abstract

The unintentional drop of body core temperature below 35 A degrees C is a serious health disorder. Most of the time hypothermia is due to environmental conditions;however, there are secondary causes that should also be considered. Virtually speaking, all emergency medical patients are jeopardized by heat loss. High-degree hypothermia is a life-threatening situation, among others, due to cardiocirculatory instability that might lead to cardiac arrest and the need for cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A variety of practice guidelines describe escalating therapeutic measures for rewarming and preserving body temperature. The present article is a review of medical devices available that can be used predominantly during prehospital care in order to implement the recommended escalating measures. Moreover, we try to evaluate usefulness of the respective products.
