Abstract

Coronary artery disease is the most common cause of death in Western countries. Antithrombotic treatment is mandatory in patients with non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS). The ultimate goal of this medical therapy is to prevent ischaemic complications. The new guidelines developed by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) in 2020 encourage an individualized approach in order to select the optimal antithrombotic therapy, depending on the management strategy (invasive or conservative), the risk for ischaemic and bleeding complications, as well as the presence of comorbidities like atrial fibrillation. The aim of this review paper is to summarize the current and novel recommendations for the antithrombotic management of patients with NSTE-ACS.
