Abstract

This brief paper considers the role of horses in the work of the Arabic philosophical zoographer Ibn Abil-Ash'ath (10th c. CE). It will be shown that horses take a predominant role among other animals and argued that this role, though indebted to tradition, is philosophically explained by Galenic considerations of temperaments. Also, Ibn Abi l-Ashath's text, though not all the Galenic argumentation, influenced some later zoographical authors.
