Abstract
Two decades ago, virtual companies were in the spotlight for their innovative form of organizing enabled by novel technologies. But what happened to this tantalizing vision of a self-calibrating constellation of independent actors? By tracing discussions on virtual companies, our review suggests that the hype in the information systems literature has faded. Practical examples of virtual companies are still rare despite technological advancements. Finally, we discuss and compare virtual companies to ecosystems that instead dominate today's discussions.
