Abstract

The article provides a survey on hippological and hippiatric literature in Latin language from Antiquity to Late Middle Ages. Particular attention is devoted to the treatises on horse-medicine of the Late Antiquity (Mulomedicina Chironis, Pelagonius’ Ars veterinaria and Vegetius’ Digesta artis mulomedicinalis) and to the key-texts of the so-called ‘Stallmeisterzeit’ (Jordanus Ruffus’ De medicina equorum, Albertusvorlage, Theodoricus’ Mulomedicina und Laurentius Rusius’ Mareschalcia). The study of antique and medieval Latin technical texts on horses and horse-care, which needs a strong interdisciplinary approach, has improved in the last years; many critical editions and secondary literature has been published. Nevertheless, there are still gaps to be filled.
