Abstract

A five-year-old, neutered male, Thai cat was treated with a spot-on antiparasitic for dogs, containing permethrin, by his owner. Within one hour, the cat developed restlessness, followed by generalised tonic-clonic seizures. After eight hours, the cat was somnolent and recumbent. Following symptomatic treatment and decontamination, intravenous lipid treatment with a 20% lipid solution was initiated as a bolus of 1.5 ml/kg followed by a constant rate infusion of 0.25 ml/kg/min for 30 min and repeated after 19 hours due to lack of clinical improvement. Neurologic symptoms improved within 57 hours after initial presentation and 24 hours following the second intravenous lipid treatment. The cat was discharged 3.5 days after presentation without any further symptoms or long-term effects.
