Abstract

Endoscopy is still an important part of visceral surgery, and every practising visceral surgeon should have at least basic knowledge in this field. However, further training in flexible endoscopy is very heterogeneous in Germany. There is a need for action in the future to clearly delineate the competencies to be acquired for prospective visceral surgeons and thus expand treatment options, without however replacing other specialised disciplines, such as gastroenterology. This paper presents possible perspectives and future development of endoscopy in the field of visceral surgery.
