Abstract

Mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) or concussion is a frequent reason for presentation to a pediatric emergency department. In acute situations priority is initially given to a thorough assessment of the child and the chain of events in order to decide on the further procedures. In this context, clinical decision aids are available, which are presented in this review in addition to information about the definition of MTBI and epidemiological aspects. In addition, this review describes biomarkers that can complement these clinical decision aids as possible future objective parameters. The family must be advised with respect to the expected course of recovery after MTBI. The topic of persisting complaints in the sense of a post-concussion syndrome (PCS) is becoming more important. Risk factors for the development of PCS, the diagnostics when PCS is suspected and treatment approaches are outlined.
