Abstract

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) represents one of the most frequent treatment diagnoses among degenerative spinal diseases;however, the attribution of such a complaint to the typical imaging features of LSS is often unclear. The high prevalence of radiological diagnoses of LSS, a high percentage of asymptomatic or oligosymptomatic LSS and the existence of differential diagnoses with similar symptoms make a precise diagnosis more difficult. This situation has effects on the chance of success, especially for surgical treatment. For surgical decompression in turn, there are questions with respect to the use of implants and/or fusion techniques in contrast to decompression alone and particularly in cases of degenerative spondylolisthesis. Recent well-designed qualitative studies, however, indicate that decompression alone is not inferior to the more comprehensive treatment by decompression plus fusion.
