Abstract
Background Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) are rare tumor entities that often have a good prognosis even in metastatic disease. NET patients with multiple metastases can also be suited for isolated or combined therapy approaches with local or locoregional therapies, similar to patients with other primary tumors in oligometastatic disease stages. Furthermore, interventional therapies can be used for patients with endocrine tumors. Objectives Outline the role of minimally invasive therapies for the treatment of patients with neuroendocrine or endocrine tumors, present available therapy options, and describe criteria for therapy selection. Materials and methods A PubMed literature search including reviews, clinical trials focusing on minimally invasive, image-guided tumor therapies, and current guidelines of professional societies was performed. Results Goals of minimally-invasive tumor therapies are improving the prognosis and effectively relieve tumor related symptoms. Thermal ablation and radiation-based ablation can be used for local treatment. Locoregional therapies are used to achieve local tumor control and symptom relief. Transarterial embolization, chemical embolization, and radioembolization are available. For patients with endocrine tumors, minimally invasive techniques can be used to ablate adrenal tumors or metastases from endocrine thyroid malignancies as an alternative to resection. Conclusion The available treatment options are effective and safe, often improving prognosis, and almost always achieving symptom relief. Treatment selection should be evidence-based and also take into account tumor biology, disease stage, individual risk assessment, and multidisciplinary tumor board consensus, which is guided by recommendations by the professional societies.
