Abstract

The current challenges to the global food system require organized societal efforts and decisive political action. Key principles of evidence-based policy can also be applied to public health and nutrition policy, as scientific evidence can help identify appropriate courses of action and assess the intended and unintended effects of policies. Assessments and decisions should not be made on the basis of individual studies, but should take the entire body of available evidence into account. In the sense of a necessary pluralism of methods, this includes various forms of direct and indirect evidence. For three approaches - regulation of food advertising, food taxation, and nutrition education - the evidence base is described in this paper. For the scientific community, nutrition policy issues pose the challenge of engaging in a dialogue with relevant social and political actors and with the public.
