Abstract
This contribution presents the epigraphic finds from the 2023 excavations in the New Town of Assur. A clay sarcophagus of an ovoid-elliptical shape bears an incised alphabetic inscription giving a date: the 15th day of the month Ab in the year 153 of the Seleucid era, that is July/August 158 BC. Brief as the text is, it provides precious insights into writing and dating practices at Assur after the end of local cuneiform writing and before the rise of the Eastern Mesopotamian scribal tradition that would eventually spread to Hatra and other areas. Three brick fragments with cuneiform inscriptions are of interest mainly because of their find context. Originally part of the nearby quay wall of Adad-nerari I of Assyria (r. 1305–1274 BC), they were set into the fabric of the walls of a much younger chamber tomb dated to the first centuries AD.
