Abstract

Recommendations for prescribing malaria chemoprophylaxis or standby-therapy lack a solid evidence base that results in subjectivity and wide variation of daily practice among different health care professionals providing pre-travel advice. German providers of pre-travel counselling participated in a survey that was conducted using the Delphi method. Similar to the smaller scale European studies before, the experience of German participants was rather diverse as was their selection of chemoprophylaxis or standby regimens. It seems necessary to improve the evidence base on efficacy, risk, recommendations and adherence to malaria regimen both on a national and international level. Discussion among German experts may reduce the variability in prescriptions in travel clinics and pharmacies.
