Abstract

International travel and foreign work stays are increasing continuously, considering travel-related illnesses not much attention is given to psychic disorders, however, Based on an eco-bio-psychosocial model different travel-related stressors can be separated like culture-shock, climate, time shift, isolation, over-stimulation, language problems and violence. Stress can trigger or worsen psychiatric disorders like anxiety, panic, mood, depressive, adjustment, psychotic and substance-related disorders. Among specific syndromes are the Jerusalem and the Stendhal syndrome, Emergency psychiatric medicine consists in crisis intervention techniques and treatment with psychotropics (antipsychotics, anxiolytics). Supply possibilities at the face should be investigated, return journey considered. Preventive consultation regarding medication (dosage, intake schedule, interactions) should be undertaken, after return somatic and psychological controls are recommended.
