Abstract

Gunshot and stab wounds are seldom in Germany. The primary goal of acute emergency medical care consists of identifying potentially life-threatening injuries and treating them in a targeted manner. Determination of whether a patient suffering from uncontrolled internal bleeding will benefit from rapid transfer to the nearest suitable hospital is a special challenge for emergency services personnel. Required interventions should be carried out on site, while measures that can be taken care of during transport (en route) or in the emergency room should be postponed. The time required for effective treatment can be optimized by (1) working in a structured manner using a priority-based algorithm (e.g. PHTLS) and (2) a horizontal approach in a team ("everyone knows his own task", "all working in parallel").
