Abstract

The development of a vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) is a milestone in the prevention of HPV-related disease. HPV infection is the most common cause of anogenital diseases. Although the majority of HPV infections do not cause symptoms and resolve spontaneously, persistent infection with specific HPV types (most frequently HPV 16 and HPV 18) may lead to precancerous lesions which may progress to cervical cancer. HPV infection is also associated with other anogenital cancers (vulva, vagina, penis, anus) and head and neck cancer. The vaccines are safe and effective. Current evidence supports the recommendation of prophylactic vaccination. Therapeutic vaccines are under development. This article discusses the efficacy and adverse effects of various HPV vaccines available on the German market.
