Abstract
Whiplash-associated disorders and associated phenomena have been studied for decades not only from a therapeutic perspective but also by diverse forensic disciplines. This article outlines the basic principles of expert assessment of causation in cases with claims of accident-related functional impairment in the cervical spine region. In this first part of this CME article the technical reconstruction of vehicle collisions and the biomechanical aspects of the expertise are presented, i.e. the areas of the interdisciplinary approach that deal with the parameters of the external mechanical forces on the body. The second part will present the medical and legal aspects of the forensic expertise of whiplash-associated disorders.
