Abstract

An increased prevalence of infectious diseases has to be assumed for corpses in legal medicine. The basic principles of infection prevention are important for permanent maintenance of the health of personnel. Transmission routes of infectious diseases, postmortem infectiousness and persistence of pathogens are described. Standards and laws exist for infection prevention but independent from this, efficient and cost-effective principles of infection prevention can be deduced by the ways of pathogen transmission. The necessary hygiene measures are presented in risk-based charts. These charts can be used as templates for the creation of hygienic standards in every institute and can also be used to perform a risk assessment as to whether the necessary measures have been implemented. Heads of institutes have an obligation to implement the necessary measures and this responsibility cannot be delegated.
