Abstract

This article gives a brief overview of the basic concepts and terms of group psychotherapy. It describes the development from the beginnings to the present. In particular, the group boom of the 1970s and 1980s and the "quiet years" thereafter are described. The current situation in Germany is characterized by the four fields of polarization between psychoanalytically oriented (tiefenpsychologisch fundiert) and analytical group therapy as well as between individual and group treatment. This is due to the professional political developments following the psychotherapists law. The author sees in recent times the opportunity to reduce these delimitations and to reach a stronger integration in the area of the psychoanalytically based (psychodynamic) field under the signs of the influence of interactional and intersubjective perspectives.
