Abstract
This article demonstrates the application of depth hermeneutic analysis within the cultural field and highlights the resulting gains of knowledge. The memorial that was built to commemorate the genocide of Sinti and Roma population groups during the National Socialist period in Germany, is interpreted using areception-oriented, phenomenological approach. The methodology applies principles of participant observation and scenic understanding. The focus of the analysis is the transference-relationship with the place, i.e. emotional reactions, associative thoughts and imagery that visitors experience at the memorial when confronted with its stark symbolism. Almost inevitably, the confrontation with the memorial will lead to an action goal of political nature, which far exceeds the obligation to take historical responsibility for the genocide carried out by Germany and further exceeds the already decided rejection of the drawing a line debate (Schlussstrichdebatte). Deciphering the latent meaning of the central design elements conveys the implicit message of aplea to equally turn against the right populist perfidious attempts of division, the reinvigorated nationalism in Germany and Europe as well as against the hate and violence propaganda by extremist groups of different ideologies. The added value of such aculture of commemoration and remembrance, and the recognizable assignment for the present day for political positioning are discussed.
