Abstract

Objective The study aimed to examine the current state of structures, research funding as well as research topics in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PRM) in Germany. Methods A questionnaire was developed which captures the status of research in PMR in Germany. 109 institutions in particular institutes, universities and clinics, received the questionnaire. The analysis was primarily descriptive. Results About 77 % of the 32 responding universities received third-party funds. The most important external investors were foundations, German Pension Insurance (Deutsche Rentenversicherung Bund) and achievement-oriented (LOM) universities. Research in the field of rehabilitation predominate research activity in physical medicine. The research topics are broad and range from therapeutic research to rehabilitation access and needs. Quantitative methods were predominantly used. Conclusion The survey provides information of the existing research structure of PRM as well as relevant topics. Research in physical medicine is less common than rehabilitation research.
