Abstract
With the discovery of Helicobacter pylori, the concept of the stomach being a sterile organ changed for the first time. The use of modern nucleotide sequencing and culture-independent techniques as well as animal studies suggest an influence of bacteria other than Helicobacter plyori on gastroduodenal pathologies. The differentiation of resident and transient bacteria and the understanding of their detailed functions inside of the bacterial community remain unclear. This review provides a concise overview on the current knowledge of Helicobacter pylori and other bacteria in the relationship with gastroduodenal pathologies.
