Abstract

Background. The most widely known of the scientifically accepted identification methods is fingerprint identification (dactyloscopy). In the case where the epidermal ridges are covered by gloves, shoes or socks there are no publications dealing analytically with the explanatory power or the evidential value of this kind of trace evidence. Aim. The present study analyzed the explanatory power and the evidentiary value of metric and morphognostic features of footprints considering two different parameters (parameter 1 clothing, parameter 2 movement). Material and methods. A series of footprints with different values of the 2 parameters were taken from 33 subjects. Every series consisted of eight different single prints. Afterwards selected metric and morphognostic features were evaluated in terms of their different morphology and evidential value. Results. The results show that in 25% of all length and width dimensions parameter 1 (clothing) has a significant influence on the metric data. The morphognostic features are not deviant. Regarding parameter 2 (movement) all of the length dimensions presented significantly different metric data, whereas the predominant number of width dimensions were not significantly different in their measurements. The morphognostic characteristics especially regarding the toes are significantly different with varying parameter values. Conclusion. If different imprints of feet covered with socks are detected at a crime scene, small metric deviations of length and width dimensions as well as differences in the morphognostic features do not necessarily lead to the exclusion of a suspect, at least not before the conditions under which the footprints were generated are known.
