Abstract

Due to increased life expectancy, the number of individuals requiring orthopedic implants is increasing. Complications thereof may be infection or implant loosening. Alloy metals and/or bone cement may induce a symptomatic implant allergy (pain, eczema, erysipelas-like skin disease, impairment of wound healing or mobility). Here we present a peculiar case attending our outpatient for occupational skin diseases for expert assessment: It had to be determined (i) whether an implant allergy had occured as a consequence of an accident during a mandatory corporate sports programm and (ii) whether a contact allergy to nickel was its probable cause or a partial cause of disease manifestation or worsening of indirect accident consequences. If so, the reduction of the earning capacity should be estimated with regard to a nickel allergy since surgical implant of the ankle endoprosthetics.
