Abstract
Looking back on his many years of experience as atraining analyst, the author describes the frequently bemoaned dilemma of the training analysis between didactic intention and concerns about personality development. The training conveys aspecific basic psychoanalytic competence. Through experience and appropriation of theories and concepts after the training, acompetence based on experience is developed. It forms together with one's own life experience and the personal image of man the basis of asubjective psychoanalytic identity. Despite all the shortcomings, according to the author, the institution of the training analysis generally conveys important personal experiences. It also provides asufficient didactic basis for the practice, at least in relation to the standard applications as analytical psychotherapy. However, it is doubtful whether the training analysis in its present form will meet the demands that are to be expected with the transfer of the training from private institutes to the universities and with the increasing importance of psychodynamic deep psychological based psychotherapy.
