Abstract
In the 1950s Robert Schuman, Konrad Adenauer and Alcide De Gasperi began the project of European integration. All three were Catholics. Does it make sense then to talk of Europe as a Catholic project? There are certainly hints, such as the twelve golden stars in the European flag or the notion of the term "subsidiarity" in the Treaties of the European Union. Nevertheless, as a whole Europe was a mere alliance of convenience lacking in a true cultural or religious foundation. It remains as such until this day.
