Abstract

Fractures in childhood and adolescence mostly involve a skeleton that is still in the growth phase. The dynamics of this growth must be included in the treatment decisions. This necessitates knowledge of the typical age-related injuries and fracture forms, the radiological characteristics in childhood and adolescence as well as the growth and corrective potential of individual growth plates. As long as the growth plates are not yet completely closed, pediatric traumatological expertise is indispensable in the treatment of fractures. Because children and adolescents with fractures are often cotreated by their pediatrician from the first presentation up to the follow-up control, this article provides an overview of the most frequently encountered fractures and the principles of fracture treatment in childhood and adolescence. The dialogue between the treating pediatrician and an experienced pediatric traumatologist is decisive for optimal treatment.
