Abstract

Aim Many healthcare institutions in Germany raise significant funds to finance projects in medical care for their additional requirements. The present study examines the motivations, influencing factors and socio-demographic characteristics of donors who support healthcare, research and academic projects of university hospitals in Germany. Method The eight participating university hospitals sent a four-page questionnaire to 7205 of their donors. It was evaluated socio-demographic data and asked for personal interests and motivation in connection with the donations. Results 60 % of the 1317 responders are former patients of the facility they are donating to. Two-thirds of the responders are married, retired and usually have a monthly net household income between 1500 and 2500 EUR. The older participants more often donate for gratitude for the received medical care, while younger more often due to altruistic reasons. There is a significant relationship between income and the willingness to make a gift. Conclusion Donors for German health care institutions donate from heterogeneous motivational situations. Socio-Demographic factors affect donor's motivation. The study imparts insights how healthcare institutions can position themselves to gain donations for their additional requirements.
