Abstract

This study investigated 213 unsolicited comments written by 86 patients with cancer into questionnaire margins of a longitudinal study on emotional adjustment 1 year post diagnosis. Comments were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Six main themes were developed using conventional thematic analysis: (a) coping and adjustment;(b) interaction with the care system;(c) social relationships;(d) "spillover" effects;(e) coincidental life events;and (f) return-to-work. Gender differences and 2 innovative themes emerged: distress and uncertainty resulting from wait times and the occurrence of other major life events that at times may have overshadowed or accentuated the distress of cancer.
