Abstract
Hearing loss in children and adolescents might lead to restricted speech understanding in noise even with adequate hearing amplification. The authors discuss the results of a restrospective analysis of hearing status of 30 children and adolescents (8,8 +/- 2,4 years, 16 boys and 14 girls) with sensory hearing loss using speech in quiet and speech in noise tests (Freiburger, Oldenburger [Kinder-]Satztest). In 90% of the children speech understanding in noise was restricted. For children and adolescents, speech understanding therefore might still be restricted in everyday's acoustic conditions even after hearing amplification. Regular assessment of speech understanding and possible social sequelae is necessary in children and adolescents suffering hearing loss.
