Abstract

Along with the fourth update of the German Medical Association guideline for the determination of the irreversible loss of brain function (brain death) in 2015, the recommendations of the German Society for Clinical Neurophysiology and Functional Imaging (DGKN) for the ancillary electrophysiological (electroencephalography, early auditory evoked potentials, somatosensory evoked potentials) and neurovascular (Doppler sonography, duplex sonography) tests were revised. In 2018, the recommendations of the DGKN were updated with respect to several points. Beside editorial adaptations (e.g., the replacement of the term standard signal by calibration signal, the more precise formulation of the electrode locations for electroencephalography), standards of display screen with digital electroencephalography and age-related minimum values of mean arterial pressure for Doppler and duplex sonography in children were newly included. These recommendations presented herewith describe the indications, limitations, requirements and execution of these ancillary tests in the diagnosis of irreversible loss of brain function in children and adults.
