Abstract
Background Evaluation of specific challenges and necessary conditions for a more successful and competitive research in Germany. Methods Two online surveys, one among 18 professors for palliative care and one among 49 non-clinical researchers. Descriptive data analysis using SPSS and qualitative content analysis. Results Professorships were very heterogeneous regarding structural integration as well as personnel, financial, and space resources. On institutional level the need for more chairs, their adequate resources and facilities, as well as improved perspective of clinical and non-clinical researchers were indicated. Non-clinical researchers are highly qualified but face structural difficulties limiting their personal possibilities and career perspective. Despite a high intrinsic motivation, the majority of participants doesn't expect to be working in palliative care research in 10 years. Conclusion More flexible and structurally independent funding, models promoting young scientists and the support of multiprofessionality are necessary to strengthen competitive palliative care research in Germany.
