Abstract
There is an abundant amount of different materials available to the surgeon for augmentation procedures in the oral cavity. Personal experience, patient preferences and the local defect situation are factors that influence the decision which material to use, but also the scientific background of each material, expert opinion and advertisement play a role in this decision process. There is not the one procedure or graft material for all the situations as each technique features its own pros and cons. In the last years some literature surveys and meta analysis did answer some but not all of the pressing questions. It was demonstrated that bone confined lesions such as extraction sockets don't require a specific material as well as small vertical or lateral defects although the specifications of the used barriers gain significant importance in these cases. For large vertical and lateral defects the evidence in the literature clearly points at autogenous block grafts or particulate graft materials combined with a titanium barrier.
