Abstract

Like organic plastics, silicones cover a wide range of applications. This article describes how silicones are manufactured, starting from quartz, and gives an introduction to the chemistry of silicones. Selected practical examples are used to explain the structure and the resulting properties of the compounds. In chemistry teaching, knowledge about inorganic and organic chemistry is used to elucidate the properties of selected silicones based on their chemical structure, so called structure-properties-relations. In the "combustion behavior" experiment, the combustion products can be traced back to their main component elements silicon (silicone sample) and carbon (plastic sample). The relationship between chemical structure and properties hence can also be developed with silicones as example.
