Abstract

Ulcerative colitis (UC) represents a chronic inflammatory bowel disease associated with an increasing incidence worldwide. In Germany, the incidence is approximately 4:100,000;thus roughly 40,000 patients suffer from UC. The clinical picture can differ significantly, and a thorough knowledge of the treatment algorithms is of eminent importance since the prognosis and quality of life of the patients strongly depend on precise medical and surgical regimens.
