Abstract

Early childhood wheezing is a very common symptom in toddlers and preschool children, which often leads to physician visits and hospital presentation and can be very stressful for the affected families. The tasks of pediatricians in accompanying the affected children and their families are manifold. Starting with a detailed medical history in order to exclude respiratory symptoms other than wheeze as well as specific causes of this respiratory disorder which can lead to wheezing, diagnostic tests should also include orientating allergological screening tests to identify specific sensitizations for a better prediction of the risk of developing asthma. Positive encouragement, supported by the overall good prognosis and including elements of patient education, can be helpful to ensure that drug treatment does not uncritically follow the treatment guidelines of bronchial asthma, as the evidence for many drug interventions is significantly less in preschool age. A good cooperation between pediatricians and scientists is indispensable in order to identify practice-oriented risk factors that can better predict the course of the disease and to develop and assess interventional approaches.
