Abstract

Up to 20% of prescription drugs can impair driving safety. In contrast to alcohol or illegal drugs this will only be evident in cases of grossly conspicuous behavior or accidents. Traffic offences under the influence of pharmaceutical drugs are punishable according to 315-316 German Penal Code (StGB) if they are partly responsible. A high potential risk can be attributed to long-acting sedative/hypnotic drugs, first generation antihistamines, antipsychotics and tricyclic antidepressants. Over the counter drugs can also impair driving safety. If several drugs are taken simultaneously, information on severe drug interactions is available from product characteristics or interaction databases. An additive intensification of effects can at least be assumed and consumption of alcohol should be avoided. For drug analysis, identificationmethods and for unknown substances possibly broad screening methods should be used. In cases of impairment an individual case assessment is recommended.
