Abstract

Background: Obesity is a major public health challenge and disproportionately affects individuals with mental health disorders. Due to limited therapeutic options, prevention is of special importance. Objective: Presentation of the current state of knowledge on obesity prevention with a particular focus on individuals with mental illnesses and links to mental health in general. Methods Narrative literature review. Results: Obesity and mental illness often co-occur, which is explained by common causes and mutual reinforcement. Obesity is often associated with relevant individual suffering caused by negative health consequences and stigmatization. Obesity can negatively affect the course of mental illnesses. Obesity prevention, in particular promotion of physical activity, can have adjunctive benefits for mental health. Mental health professionals have various possibilities to support patients with mental illnesses in maintaining a healthy body weight without putting them under pressure or increasing (self)stigmatization. This includes support for lifestyle modification, including a healthy diet and physical activity (behavioral interventions). Moreover, it is essential to create environments that make a healthy lifestyle possible, simple and attractive (environmental interventions). Conclusion Measures for obesity prevention can contribute to promoting mental health. Individuals with mental illnesses at risk of weight gain should receive professional support when necessary.
