Abstract

Background: In order to successfully treat critically ill children, it is necessary to identify them as quickly as possible. Use of a systematic approach and standardized algorithms is helpful. Once a critically ill child has been recognized, adequate treatment has to be initiated without delay. Objective: Presentation of a systematic and standardized examination approach to identify critically ill children and description of the necessary measures for structured initial treatment. Materials and methods: The current literature and guideline recommendations for the treatment of critically ill children are evaluated and discussed. In addition, a video is provided to demonstrate the systematic approach to identify and treat critically ill children (available online). Conclusion Tools such as the pediatric diagnostic triangle and the ABCDE algorithm provide guidance to quickly identify and adequately treat critically ill children. An adequate initial treatment following the described structured approach is helpful for targeted therapy. Regular team training in emergency treatment helps to implement structured algorithms in practice and to improve patient outcome.
