Abstract

Acute pancreatitis is a common cause for hospital admission to the gastroenterology department. In 80% of cases, it will be a mild, self-limiting disease, with no permanent organ dysfunction. In case of severe acute pancreatitis, organ failure and sepsis due to infected necrosis are the main life-threatening complications. Leading causes of acute pancreatitis are gallstone disease, alcohol consumption and smoking. In young patients, genetic risk factors also play a role. This continuing medical education article provides an overview on diagnostic criteria, diagnostic work-up, initial management, disease severity classification, prophylaxis of infections and treatment of complications.
