Abstract

Infectious diarrhea is an increasing challenge for the healthcare system. The frequently self-limiting course of disease without any need for pathogen diagnostics contrasts with an increasing number of hospitalizations of patients at risk. This review gives an overview of the need for rational diagnostics and the basics of symptomatic and specific therapy, taking into account reimbursable agents. Sexually transmitted diseases will be also considered as a relevant differential diagnosis for persistent diarrhea.
