Abstract
The collection of personal data through the provision of digital services is increasing in scale as new technologies emerge. However, whereas data has a protectable character to users, it has a monetary character to service providers. Although the tensions between data privacy and data monetization are increasingly apparent in practice, they have hardly been explored so far. Building on an explorative research approach, we seek to develop an understanding of the tensions by synthesizing the individual streams of research on data privacy and data monetization. Based on the conceptualization of the tensions as a conflict of interest between users and service providers, we conduct a systematic literature analysis to identify and categorize the interests and explore their interplay. The findings reveal that the tensions are not only conflictual, but that data privacy and data monetization can interact in ways to create mutual benefit.
